Syrah or Shiraz. Good Syrahs or Shiraz in Australia, can age up to half a century. Syrahs are rich, complex and distinctive wines, with smooth, supple texture and smooth tannins. They embody pronounced pepper, spice, black cherry, tar, leather and roasted nut flavors. Long used for table wine blends, an increasing number of high-quality bottlings are being made. Syrah has the early-drinking appeal of Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.
